The event began at 6:30 pm. First of all, there was an introduction of participants. I had an introduction about myself and my contributions in Fedora Project. As a Fedora contributor, I introduced to participants about key goals of Fedora release party.

As usual, the first content that I introduced to everyone was about Fedora Project and a brief history of the project. It was so difficult to me to talk about the Project in a short time, so I tried to focus on some key contents such as the missions, the objectives and four foundations of Fedora Project. I also talked about Fedora Community as well as some updated information related to Fedora Community in Vietnam.

Introduction to Fedora Project

The next content that I introduced to everyone was the topic: “Fedora.next – the shape of Fedora in the post-Fedora 20 feature”. We discussed about the architecture for a More Agile Fedora and explained clearly to everyone about 5 working groups (Fedora Workstation, Fedora Server, Fedora Cloud, Base Design and Environments & Software Stacks). We also began to help participants join into one of the working groups. Everyone seemed to be excited when being known a lot of information about “Fedora.next”.

To continue the event, I introduced the changes and greatest features of Fedora 20. This was an interesting topic which got much attention.

The end of event was an open discussion about Fedora and FOSS. This was the most vibrant part as people were freely talk about their concerns or unclear things. Everyone took some nice photos. Fedora 20 DVDs and stickers were gifts for participants.

Software Freedom Day in Hanoi / Report

Hi everyone,

Following the success of Fedora 19 release party in Hanoi, it was Software Freedom Day (SFD) which was successfully held in Hanoi, Vietnam on 21st, September, 2013 at Hanoi University of Technology. There was about 300 people participating SFD this year.

As you know, Software Freedom Day is an annual worldwide celebration of Free Software. It is a public education effort with the aim of increasing awareness of Free Software and its virtues, and encouraging its use. It is also an event that many Open Source Communities meet each other to introduce their Communities, as well as to help everyone join Open Source Communities in the world. There were Hanoi Community Space, Fedora Vietnam, Ubuntu Vietnam, NukeViet, OpenStack Vietnam, etc. Fedora Vietnam Community had a booth and many talks in this event.

To begin the event, there was a talk about Software Freedom Day of Mr. Nguyen Hong Quang (president of VFOSSA). Mr. Quang introduced a breif history of Software Freedom Day, and activities which were taken place during the event. The first talk was very interesting and everyone seemed very excited when listening the talk.

SFD was continued organizing as barcamp style this year. There was about over 15 registered topics and each of topics were voted by participants. The topics having higher votes will be discussed at the main hall. The topics having lower votes will be discussed at the other small rooms. I registered a topic “Introduction to Fedora project and How to contribute to the project”. My topic had 20 votes and it was discussed at 11:30 am at the third room.

Introduction to Fedora Project was the first content that I would like to present to everyone. To be known that almost participants did not know about Free Software, as well as the history of its development, so firstly I talked about the history of Free and Open Source Software.

Secondly, I introduced to everyone about Redhat company and explained the relationship between Redhat and Fedora project.

The second content that I would like to talk about was Fedora project. It was true that it was so difficult to me to talk about the Project in a short time. So, I tried to focus on some key contents such as the missions and objectives of Fedora Project. Next, I clearly explained to participants four foundations of Fedora project. Most of participants were very interested in the fourth foundation (“First”). They asked me many questions related to this foundation. After my explanation, everyone knew more useful information about Fedora.

Besides, I talked about Fedora Community and some updated information related to Fedora Community in Vietnam such as the number of ambassadors, the number of contributors, and the number of active contributors joining Fedora project at the moment, etc.

The next content that I introduced to everyone was the topic: “How we can join and start contributing to Fedora Project?”. I talked about Fedora’s sub-projects and tried to help people join the Projects in a simple way. After that, I guided for everyone to become an Ambassador step by step. It was true that there was many students who want to start contributing to Fedora such as joining Ambassador program, Free Media program, Documentation project, etc.

There was many interesting topics discussed in the afternoon. Especially, there was a game competition taken place in main hall. Students liked the game very much. They tried their best to play the game to take the highest award at the final match.

The event ended at about 5:30 pm. Everyone returned the main hall to join closing ceremony. As usual, there was a small party with participants and beer 🙂

During the event, everyone took some nice photos. Fedora 19 Multi-Desktop DVDs, Fedora buttons, and stickers were gifts for participants.

To sum up, SFD was successfully organized. Fedora Vietnam Community had also good activities in the event. We hope that there will be more and more people contributing to Fedora in near future in Vietnam.

All photos of the event can be found here.

Thank you and see you soon in next events!

Fedora Meetup in Danang April, 2013 / Report

In the recent years, FOSS has been developing rapidly in Vietnam. There are many new Open Source projects created by students and companies from day to day. In order to promote and expand the development of FOSS, “National FOSS Application and Development Conference” was organized by DSA, Duy Tan University, VFOSSA, and other co-organizers at Danang Software Park on 25th, April, 2013.

This was the first time Fedora Vietnam Community participated a big local FOSS event. We had many Fedora-related activities such as introducing Fedora project and its community, as well as joining the discussion programme with students about Fedora.

On the first day of the event, there were FOSS Communities’ exhibition stores. Fedora Vietnam Community’s exhibition store attracted a large number of students and participants. In the exhibition area, we had a range of Fedora banner displays and swags (CDs, stickers). Besides, we also had a computer displaying Fedora OS. Everybody was so curious to know what the Fedora OS was, what it looked like, and so on. In addition to Fedora Vietnam Community’s exhibition store, there were other exhibition stores such as NukeViet Community, OpenStack Vietnam Community and others.

The second programme on the fist day was the discussion between FOSS Vietnam Communities and students. As a Fedora ambassador, I had a presentation about Fedora project, its sub-projects, Fedora Vietnam Community and how we can contribute to Fedora. Participants were so excited about my talk.

The conference was officially taken place on the second day on 26th, April, 2013. There were a lot of presentations about FOSS, its communities, and policies for developing FOSS in Vietnam, etc. Near the conference centre, there were many FOSS Communities’ exhibition areas. We were so glad for introducing Fedora to everyone.

After taking place the event, I organized a meet-up with DanangLUG. We together discussed many topics about Fedora project and FOSS. Our objectives were to expand Fedora Community in Vietnam, as well as contribute to Fedora project.

The event was successful. Although one of my other Fedora activities were not done, but I was so glad for having active activities to contribute to Fedora project in Vietnam.

Event’s photos could be found here.

See you in the next Fedora events!

About 30 people

In an intimate environment of the review and first birthday ceremony of VFOSSA, Fedora 18 was introduced to all members of VFOSSA and students.

As normal, in the beginning of the party, there was a talk of Mr. Truong Anh Tuan, which was about Fedora’s project and community. He described in details about the Fedora’s mission, Fedora’s four core values, and the differences between Fedora and other GNU/Linux distros. For each of them, he clearly explained and gave real examples. Audiences seemed very excited.

To be followed was a presentation of Mr. Truong Anh Tuan about how to join and contribute to Fedora project. That might be the part which he wanted to mention the most with audiences. He showed that getting involved in a FOSS project or Fedora project is very interesting, people would study a lot from them. Besides, sub-projects related to OS developing as people person, designer, content writer, etc were pretty attractive. He said: “It’s not difficult to join the Fedora project. You must not be a programmer. Everyone is welcomed!”

Lastly was Mr. Truong Anh Tuan’s talk about Fedora Vietnam community. He gave information as a large number of project’s contributors, active members and Fedora developing plan in Vietnam.

Following Mr. Truong Anh Tuan’s talks, it was mine: “What is new inside Fedora 18?”. I described the big changes and most considerable features of Fedora 18, for instances, desktop users, systems administrations, etc. For each of them, I clearly explained in details. Participants were very interested in too.

In deed, the time for Mr. Truong Anh Tuan and me was too short to introduce Fedora project to everyone, however, it was fair sufficient to help people have a general idea about the project.

Total cost of the party is about 50$. Some photos can be found here!

We have a plan to hold the next party in Da Nang city this weekend, as well as Hue city in near future.

Congratulation Fedora 18!
